Recording: Online Masterclass | A Framework for How to Evaluate Interventions on Loneliness

Date; 29th October, 2024

In this Masterclass hosted by Prof. Andrea Wigfield & Dr Antonia Ypsilanti, we will start by setting the scene and presenting the key challenges on evaluating loneliness interventions drawing from national and international research. Then, we will co-create a framework that organisations can use in the future, by engaging in a group-exercise.

One of the most important challenges in the loneliness sector is the absence of a robust framework to evaluate loneliness interventions. Due to the diversity of services around the country that aim to reduce loneliness and how to evaluate them, there is a need for a more unified approach across service deliverers.

The understandable difficulty in carrying out robust randomised controlled trials both in terms of resources and with organisations trying to reduce the waiting lists of their services and therefore do not wishing to deprive people of support, creates challenges on how to evaluate interventions over time. Finally, concerns from stakeholders around the appropriateness of directly asking users if they are lonely and more widely the language we use, particularly as they enter the service for the first time, have been reported.

By the end of the Masterclass, you will be able to:

1. Appreciate the complexity of evaluating interventions on Tackling Loneliness.
2. Draw information relevant to your organisation and loneliness services you deliver.
3. Understand which loneliness measures are best suited for evaluating interventions and why.
4. Have a clearer understanding of what you are “changing” and how.
