Bridging Generations to Tackle Loneliness: The Together Project’s Approach

Jenny Read's - Crafting Connections

In a world where loneliness can affect anyone, regardless of age, The Together Project is on a mission to connect communities, spread joy, and reduce isolation through joyful intergenerational experiences. By bringing together the youngest and oldest in society, we aim to foster stronger, happier communities where everyone feels valued and included.

Why Intergenerational Activities Matter

Jenny Read - Songs and Smiles

Loneliness is a universal experience, but its impact is particularly pronounced among older adults and new parents. For older people, reduced mobility or the loss of close family and friends can lead to feelings of disconnection. Meanwhile, parents with young children often face social isolation as they navigate the challenges of early parenthood. At The Together Project, we believe intergenerational activities offer a powerful way to address loneliness on both ends of the age spectrum.

Our Programmes: Connecting People, One Smile at a Time

Songs & Smiles:

Our flagship programme, Songs & Smiles, is a weekly music group designed for 0–4-year-olds, their parents or guardians, and older people living in care homes or assisted living schemes. Sessions are filled with singing, laughter, and shared moments that create lasting connections. For older adults, these interactions provide a chance to engage with younger generations, often evoking happy memories and a sense of purpose. For parents, the sessions offer a supportive space to bond with their children while meeting others in their community.

Crafting Connections:

This nationwide arts and crafts exchange pairs children with older adults receiving care. Every month, participants swap artwork they have produced, fostering relationships through creativity. These exchanges bring smiles, spark conversations, and show that even small acts of connection can have a profound impact.

The Impact: Real Stories, Real Connections

Songs & Smiles

The results of our intergenerational programmes speak for themselves.

Care home residents frequently report feeling uplifted and re-energised after Songs & Smiles sessions, one resident said, “The children brighten my day. I look forward to them visiting each week.” Songs & Smiles sessions provide opportunities for meaningful social interaction, improved mental stimulation, and the joy of reliving cherished memories.

Parents have also shared how Songs & Smiles has helped them feel less isolated. As one parent put it, “It’s the most heartwarming hour of our week, my child gets to make new friends of hugely different ages, I get to talk to the residents and the care home staff and meet other new parents in the same situation as me.”  For parents, these sessions foster a sense of community, provide valuable bonding time with their child, and offer the reassurance of contributing to something larger than themselves.

Crafting Connections:

In a recent survey a care home Activities Coordinator said “The activities sent to one resident from his pen-pal are displayed on a wall in his bedroom. He likes to rearrange parts of his room daily but these pieces of artwork have remained in pride of place.”

One care home resident said “Aubrey makes me laugh! I love getting his pictures and words from Crafting Connections. I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t do it. You get so much from it.”

7 year old Ava added “I love crafting and I get so excited when Violet sends me her reply! Violet is really lovely and I like finding out more things about her. She is over 100 years old!”

For children, both programmes nurture empathy and understanding of different generations, laying the groundwork for a kinder, more connected society.

Lessons We’ve Learned

Through our work, we’ve learned that tackling loneliness isn’t just about reducing isolation; it’s about building inclusive, joyful spaces where people feel they belong.

The reciprocal nature of intergenerational activities is so important to remember, everyone benefits! We’ve seen how small actions—a shared song, a piece of art, or a simple smile—can make a significant difference to all involved.
