New Narratives: ‘Overcoming Loneliness as a Freelance Designer’
Here at the Tackling Loneliness Hub, we believe in the power of community and conversation.
Through ‘New Narratives’, we’ll explore the multi-faceted nature of loneliness by sharing insights and stories from as many perspectives as possible, not only to help bridge the gap between isolation and connection but to also enrich our community’s understanding of loneliness. Today’s narrative has been written by Anna Sobieniak, the Creative Director and Founder of the Sobi Branding & Graphic Design Collective.
With 15 years of rich experiences that stretch from bustling agency environments to solitary journeys abroad, Anna channels her global adventures into empowering businesses through impactful branding and engaging design. Her travels have enriched her life, cultivating a deep appreciation for community and connection, qualities she endeavours to bring to every project.
What emotional toll does working solo have on your creativity and motivation?
For 12 years I’ve worked as a graphic designer in the comfort of my own home. I am so grateful for the freedom and flexibility freelancing offers. But there’s a side to this journey that I still struggle with to this day– loneliness.
When I started my professional career, I was plucked from my grad show straight into one of the most welcoming design studios in Vancouver – Toolbox Design. Throughout my years at Toolbox I was challenged to expand my creative skills with a team of talented, like-minded individuals.
Once I made the leap to working for myself I was armored with the tools to thrive on my own thanks. To date, I’ve worked with over 150 clients and collaborated with a handful of other freelancers and agencies. But, as someone who thrives on creativity, I find myself longing for the collaborative energy of a studio environment now and again. The spontaneous brainstorming sessions, the laughter and connection shared during quick coffee breaks between meetings, and the surge of inspiration that comes from bouncing ideas off each other—these are moments that fuel my passion and innovation.
Working alone can feel isolating. There are days when the quiet walls of my home office echo with doubts and creative blocks arise. It’s during these times I miss the camaraderie and creative sparks that come from being around others.
Yet, it’s in these moments of vulnerability that I remind myself of the strength in solitude. Running my business alone has taught me resilience, self-motivation, and how to cultivate creativity from within.
However, throughout the last few years, my need for collaboration and new challenges has grown. For me, connecting with other creatives, brainstorming ideas, and helping one another, reinvigorates what it means to work as a team. I simply want more of that.
This year I created the Sobi Branding & Graphic Design Collective where I lead a team of creatives with diverse expertise. Not only do I benefit from their companionship, but we share in the joy of bringing beautiful, thoughtful brands to life. And better yet, our clients are pleased with the variety of services we now offer.
I am thrilled to be surrounded by such amazing humans, whilst still enjoying the much needed solitude my naturally introverted soul requires.
