This report is based on work carried out by Happy City (now Centre for Thriving Places) that included a comprehensive literature review of academic research and policy reports on the subject of connection and community in the UK.

Happy City carried out two pieces of original research to fill in some important gaps in the literature:

  • Secondary data analysis of the UK Community Life Survey, the Happiness Pulse and the Thriving Places Index, in particular focussing on the role of trust in community belonging and social activity.
  • Primary analysis of new poll data on the barriers to local connection, highlighting the key barriers and opportunities for connection and community in the UK.
